Audition Information

Eligibility

Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra

GNOYO participants are chosen by audition. Auditions are open to all students through the twelfth grade who play one of the following instruments:

  • Bass
  • Bass Clarinet
  • Bassoon
  • Cello
  • Clarinet
  • Flute
  • French Horn
  • Harp
  • Oboe
  • Percussion
  • Piano
  • Trombone
  • Trumpet
  • Tuba
  • Viola
  • Violin

Although auditions occur in May and August, GNOYO also conducts rolling auditions throughout the season.

Requirements

Each audition will last approximately four minutes and include:

1. Scales (as listed below)

  • Violin - G, Bb, two octaves for the string orchestras, three octaves for the full orchestras
  • Viola, Cello - C, D, two octaves for the string orchestras, three octaves for the full orchestras
  • Bass - E, G, one octave for the string orchestras, two octaves for the full orchestras
  • Woodwind, Brass - chromatic over the full range of the instrument, plus the C & E scales (not concert pitch), as many octaves as possible
  • Piano, Mallets - chromatic, Bb, and E scales, all three octaves
  • Harp - no scales
  • Percussion - Percussionists will be expected to audition on both mallets and snare (with rudiments)

2. A prepared piece of the student's choice which best represents their playing level

Registration:$15

Participation:
Sinfonias & Philharmonias: $320
Symphony: $360
(fees are payable in two equal installments)
