Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra
Endangered Instruments Program
The Endangered Instruments Program (EIP) began as a way to help promising young musicians of need, while also filling GNOYO’s demand for certain difficult and rare instruments. GNOYO identifies young musicians who demonstrate musical potential, but lack the financial means necessary to develop those talents. Students are then provided weekly, subsidized private lessons with a professional musician and are loaned instruments when necessary.
Training occurs on instruments which are considered “endangered” in the orchestral community. These instruments are generally very challenging and often require private lessons in order to master. They include the viola, cello, string bass, french horn, oboe and bassoon.
The Endangered Instruments Program has resulted in numerous inspiring stories. Participants develop meaningful mentor/student relationships with professional musicians while developing their talents and love of music. Upon graduation, a majority of the EIP students go on to receive scholarships to study music at the collegiate level.
