Once again, over 160 members of the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra
(GNOYO) are ready to dazzle audience members with their renditions of
classics such as Beethoven's 5th Symphony and Offenbach's Orpheus in
the Underworld.
In addition, the concert will feature GNOYO's
Philharmonia Division Concerto Competition winners, Morgan Kent and
Reid Black.
Morgan Kent, winner of GNOYO's 2007 Concerto Competition in the
Philharmonia Division , will perform the first movement of Carl Maria
von Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor Op. 73. With only 3
years of clarinet instruction, Morgan has achieved a great deal in a
short amount of time. In 2007, Morgan was selected to perform as
Principal Clarinetist in her division at the prestigious Interlochen
Center for the Arts 2007 Summer Session in Michigan. Other recent
performances include the 29th Spring Concert of the Junior Philharmonic
Society, the 2007 production of Jane Eyre at NOCCA, and community at
events such as Bach Around The Clock. Morgan has been a student at the
New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) and a member of GNOYO
since 2005.
Reid Black, winner of GNOYO's 2008 Concerto Competition in the
Philharmonia Division, will perform the first movement of Felix
Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor Op. 25. Age 12
, Reid has
been studying the piano for the last 7 years. At age 8, Reid was
selected for the Mississippi Music Teachers' Association Honors
Recital. This led to an invitation from Mississippi Public Radio (MPR)
to perform as one of MPR's local talent performers. Reid attends
UMS-Wright Prep where he is a Headmaster's scholar, a member of the National Honors Society, a 1st place winner at the District Tech. Fair,
and the 2007 Director's Award recipient in his band. When Reid is not
playing piano, he also studies the violin and oboe.
The featured soloists will perform with GNOYO's most advanced ensemble,
the Symphony at GNOYO's March 8 concert. Tickets can be reserved
online or purchased at the door.
