Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra
GNOYO Violin Auction Fundraiser

Using damaged beyond repair violins, GNOYO solicited local artists and celebrities to create works of art, which will be auctioned to raise funds for the nonprofit music education organization.  During March and April, the violins will travel to various locations such as the New Orleans Arts Market to gain exposure within the community.

When on display, the violins will be accompanied by a bid book, which will provide interested parties the opportunity to write their silent bid.  Bids may also be placed online or mailed to the GNOYO office and MUST BE PLACED IN $50 INCREMENTS.  Winners will be announced during the May 10 concert at Loyola University's Roussel Hall. (Winners need not be present.)

*  The violin designed by GNOYO violinist Sara Shank will be raffled as opposed to auctioned.  Each raffle ticket is $5, with no limit to the number of tickets an individual may purchase.  Tickets can be downloaded and sent along with the appropriate payment (checks only) to the GNOYO office. Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase during all display events.

We will accept bids until 3pm CST on Saturday, May 10th, 2008.

LSU Violin

The Artist

Marie Tschirn graduated from LSU with a B.F.A. in Painting and Drawing in 1990. She is a professional artist who focuses on commissioned work, including murals for local schools and residents in Metairie, Mandeville and Covington. In addition to teaching private art lessons, Ms. Tschirn has taught art for Mary Queen of Peace and Art Time. In the past, her hand made dollhouses were available at The Magic Box Toy Stores. Ms. Tschirn’s creativity and passion for art are evident in the LSU- themed violin. Her daughter has been a violinist with GNOYO since 2003.

The Violin

Marie’s violin provides an artistic interpretation of “Tiger Pride.” The front displays an aged-looking decoupage of LSU’s Fight Song, with the words “Fight For L.S.U.” decorating the corner chin rest. A tiger face appears on the back. The violin is signed by Les Miles, LSU's national championship winning football coach.

Vibrant Violin

The Artist

Gretchen Weller Howard was born and raised in New Orleans. She studied design at Louisiana State University, and earned an Associate Arts Degree from The Art Institute in Atlanta, Georgia. A self-described colorist, she employs both symbols and color to communicate the deeply personal meaning of each work. Her early focus included graphic design and decorative painting, and in the last ten years has shifted to consistent mixed media abstracts. Her work has appeared in numerous private showings and is widely collected in New Orleans. "Bridge,” currently on display at the Soren Christensen is her second solo gallery exhibition.

The Violin

Ms. Howard’s use of vibrant colors and unique geometric designs creates an amazing effect. The front of the violin is divided into squares, each containing its own combination of paint and pencil design. The back is divided horizontally and is signed by Emmy and Golden Globe Award winning actor, John Goodman.
